Propane

What is propane?

Propane is a hydrocarbon, sometimes called liquefied petroleum gas, LP gas, or LPG. Propane is produced from both natural gas processing and crude oil refining. Propane is nontoxic, colorless, and virtually odorless; an identifying odor is added to propane so that the gas can be readily detected.

Who uses propane?

More than 50 million U.S. households use propane for home heating and other purposes. Millions more Americans use propane for agricultural, commercial, industrial, and transportation applications.

What can propane fuel in my home?

Furnaces, Boilers, Water Heaters, Ranges, Ovens, Stoves, Clothes Dryers, Fireplaces, Generators, Outdoor Living Spaces (grills, pools, and patio heaters)

What size tanks do you offer for residential heating?

120, 250, 325, 500, 1,000. We also offer underground tanks in two sizes; 500 & 1,000

Propane Leak in home?

Propane has a strong unpleasant smell, similar to rotten eggs or sewage. Propane manufacturers add this smell to help alert consumers of a propane leak. If you detect a leak, shut off the service valve on the tank and contact Jack’s 24-hour service immediately at 320-453-6560.

Smelling propane outside occasionally? It could be your regulatory venting, which is a common occurrence.

If you smell propane, hear a leak, and see a leak – get out of your home to a safe location and call 911 immediately.

Do I have to monitor my tank level or can someone do that for me?

We have several different options available to our customers, allowing you to choose what works best for you and your family. The three options we provide include our Keep Fill Program, Will Call, and cellular monitor devices. See our Propane tab for the specifics on each program.

Do I need to pay for the tank you provide?

Leasing our propane tank is free, provided you meet the annual minimum usage requirements of 1.5 times the tank size.

How do you determine what size tank I need?

Typically, a 500-gallon tank can hold enough propane to meet the needs of an average home.

Why does my tank only read 80% after a fill?

Tanks are filled to 80% based on the expansion factor of propane. Propane expands and contracts depending on the weather. A tank filled to 80% in the winter might read slightly lower than 80%, since propane contracts the colder the temperature. Conversely, in the warmer summer months, the gauge could read slightly higher.

When should I call for a delivery?

We ask that you call when your tank level is between 20% - 30% or 3-5 business days before needing a delivery.

What do I do if I run out of propane in my tank?

It seems I’m using a lot of propane, could there be a leak?

The average home that uses propane as the primary heat source will use approximately 7-10 gallons of propane on the coldest day of the year.

How do I read the gauge on my propane tank?

Propane tank gauges read by a percentage, not gallons. Therefore, if you have a 500-gallon tank and the gauge reads 20%, you have approximately 100 gallons in your tank. Likewise, a gauge that reads 20% on a 120-gallon tank there is approximately 24 gallons in your tank.
